Texas Rowing For All offers both recreational and competitive opportunities for our participants. It seems anytime you get a group of people together in a sports setting, someone wants to test themself on their progress in the sport. The same is true for adaptive athletes! Our team(s) attend several competitive rowing and kayaking events throughout the year. Here is a recap of 2010
Texas Erg Rodeo 2011
The annual Texas Erg Rodeo held in Gregory Gym on the University of Texas kicks off the year wioth open competition for Juniors, Collegiate, Masters and Adaptive events. Rowers push themselves by competing on Concept 2 ergometers, racing 2,000 meters on the erg as fast as they can! Winners, not only have bragging rights, they also are awarded a rodeo-type belt buckle from the University of Texas organizers.
CRASH-B’s World Indoor Rowing Championships
The World Indoor Championships are held late February on the Harvard University campus. This year we had two TRFA athletes who competed in the adaptive event. Eric McDaniel, Jr won the World Championship and trophy of a hammer! Greg LaKomski, came in 6th in the World. We are so, so proud of these incredible athletes!
Heart of Texas Regatta 2011
Each Spring, the second weekend of March the shores of Lady Bird Lake are crowded with competitors and spectators for the annual “Heart of Texas Regatta”. The Heart is also known as “HOT”, which is the largest early spring regatta in the Southwest. Texas Rowing For All adaptive athletes have competed successfully in the last 3 years. It has been a learning & advocacy experience for us. The first year we competed, we had to explain to regatta officials what we were proposing and on-the-water at the start of the race, referees were asking us to explain what we were doing in an “adaptive” event. Since that first outing the Austin rowing community has embraced the concept and practice of adaptive rowing. Adaptive events are now the standard part of any rowing regatta in Austin. As they say in that old adage “we have come a long way!”
